CZ: Svišť horský, též svišť alpský (Marmota marmota) je druh hlodavce obývající hornaté oblasti Střední a Jižní Evropy. Žije mezi 800 až 3200 m. n. m. v Alpách, Tatrách, Pyrenejích a Mount Baldou na Baldo Rive del Garda v Itálii. V Pyrenejích, kde vymřel již v období čtvrtohor byl úspěšně reintrodukován v roce 1948.
ENG: The Alpine Marmot (Marmota marmota) is a species of marmot found in mountainous areas of central and southern Europe. Alpine Marmots live at heights between 800 and 3,200 metres, in the Alps, Carpathians, Tatras, the Pyrenees and Northern Apennines Italy. They were reintroduced with success in the Pyrenees in 1948, where the Alpine Marmot had disappeared at end of the Pleistocene epoch.[2] They are excellent diggers, able to penetrate soil that even a pickaxe would have difficulty with, and spend up to nine months per year in hibernation.[3] An adult Alpine Marmot may weigh between 4 and 8 kg and reach between 42–54 cm in length (not including the tail, which measures between 13–16 cm on average). This makes the Alpine Marmot the largest squirrel species.
DE: Die Murmeltiere (Marmota marmota) sind eine aus vierzehn Arten bestehende Gattung von bis zu 50 Zentimeter langen Echten Erdhörnchen (Marmotini), die in Eurasien und Nordamerika verbreitet sind. Bei den Murmeltierarten handelt es sich primär um Bewohner kalter Steppen. Das heute nur noch in Gebirgslagen jenseits der Baumgrenze lebende Alpenmurmeltier kam während den pleistozänen Eiszeiten im europäischen Tiefland von den Pyrenäen bis zur Ukraine vor. Es fehlte dagegen in den mit einer dicken Eisschicht bedeckten Alpen. Mit dem Ende der Eiszeit boten nur noch die hochalpinen Lagen der Alpen dieser Art geeigneten Lebensraum (Eiszeitrelikt).
